Coated vs. Uncoated HDD Drill Rods for Corrosive Soils: What Works Best?

I have been selling HDD drill rods for quite some time now – five years to be exact – and if there is one question that makes me both light up and sigh at the same time, it is this: “Coated or uncoated for corrosive ground? “Which one do I really need?”

And that’s the nuance that people miss. Just because you have coated rods, doesn’t mean you can ignore your mud chemistry or let your string sit in wet ground for a week. They just give you a big margin of error.
I have one customer—Mike, let’s call him—who drills in glacial till with pockets of peat and acid water. Three years ago he changed to coated rods. I remember last month he said he’s pulled out rods with 2,500 feet of bore time and they still have 90% of their original coating. His uncoated rods used to look like dog toys chewed after 1000 feet.

Buy coated if:
You’re drilling in known corrosive areas (old landfills, coastal areas, marshy stuff, industrial brownfields).
Your job is over 500 feet and you will not be pulling the string on a daily basis.
You don’t like surprises. (And who wouldn’t eh?)
You want to keep your rods for more than two seasons.

Stay with uncoated if:
You are drilling in sandy, dry or neutral pH soil (think clean river alluvium).
Your bores are short (under 300 feet) and you pull them the same day.
Super tight budget, one and done job.
You clean your rods obsessively. You keep them indoors like fine china. (Some guys do this, and I respect that, really.)
But here’s the thing I don’t tell you in the catalogue: Even coated rods die if you abuse them. I’ve seen guys take coated rods and drag them across gravel with a skid steer and then wonder why the coating peeled. That’s like putting on a raincoat and then stabbing holes in it with a pencil. The coating is tough, but it’s not magic.
The One Thing Nobody Tells You About Paint
Ok, I’ll share a little secret with you that took me three years to figure out.
In the ground, coated rods are slipperier. Not a lot, but enough to let your mud pumps run at a little lower pressure now and then. “Those coated rods just slide on through,” one older driller told me. Second “whoa” moment for me. I always thot coatings were for rust. They are a performance enhancer, too, it turns out. But I don’t lead with that, because I don’t want you to think it’s a cure-all. It’s just a little bonus.
The Cost Question: Some Back-of-the-Napkin Math
I won’t put you to sleep with spreadsheets, but here’s the way I see it:
A coated rod set will cost you 20-25% more than an uncoated one. But if it lasts you 2.5x longer in corrosive ground you are not losing money, you are buying time. And time, my friend, is the only thing you can’t buy more of.
One customer worked out his total cost per foot for three years. Uncoated, 18 cents per foot. Coated: $0.10/ft. He wasn’t saving on the coated rods. He was saving on labour, on fishing jobs, on thread repairs, on time lost.
And downtime ? That is the silent killer. I don’t need to tell you how much it sucks to have a rig sitting idle waiting for a replacement rod to ship.

In 8 out of 10 jobs, coated rods are the smarter bet for corrosive soil. Not because I sell them, but because I have seen them save headaches. The other 2/10? These are short dry-clean jobs where uncoated works just fine and your wallet thanks you.
But here’s the thing that counts: Know your stuff. I don’t care what the brochure says. I care what your shovel tells you when you dig a test hole. I care what the local water table looks like after a rain. I care about the actual life of your last set of rods, not how long you wanted them to last.

And that’s really what this boils down to — not the coating, not the price, but the peace of mind. If it helps you sleep better to know your rods have that extra layer of armour, buy the coated ones. If knowing you saved a few bucks helps you sleep better and you’re confident in your ground, go uncoated.
